BIG BEAR LAKE

By Sean Fenner, October 24, 2008 10:07 pm

Big Bear Lake is a man made Reservoir/Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. It’s a decent sized lake at 22 miles of shoreline and 2,971  surface acres at water capacity, which sits at an elevation of about 6.750 feet . Close to home, but far away enough to feel like a vacation, fishing Big Bear is still a nice way to get away from it all. There is great Rainbow and Brown Trout Fishing in the Winter, though the Lake will start to freeze over if it gets cold enough. Also great Sunfish and Bass fishing in the Spring through Fall and  many species of Catfish in the lake from Channels to Bullhead of all varieties. In my opinion though, the best feature of Big Bear is the Carp Fishing in the flats end of the lake.

ALAMITOS BAY

Alamitos Bay is a great So Cal Surf Fishing destination. Located right next to the mouth of the San Gabriel River, it provides an Estuary filled with an assortment of different fish species. From Surf Perch and Sand Bass to Sharks and Rays your just never know what might be on the other end of your line. The quarter mile long rock jettys also create a great area for Float Tubing without the worry of drifting out to sea.

ORVIS SAFE PASSAGE SLING PACK

By Sean Fenner, October 22, 2008 4:03 am

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by the Orvis Store in Pasadena and pickup up their Safe Passage Sling Pack. Before I was wearing a vest while Fly Fishing and had really wanted a sling pack, but I could not find one that I really liked. Then my friend Dan bought one of these packs and I had seen how much he like it, so I had to get one for myself. Let me tell you this is a great pack, and I love the style and versatility. So if you need a pack check this one out at Orvis!!!

HITTIN’ THE LOCAL POND AFTER WORK

By Sean Fenner, October 18, 2008 4:21 am

A Mile Square Park Bass After Work today I decided to go over to Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley down the street from my house. The Park has two fishing lakes and the fish tend to bite a couple hours after sunrise and a couple hours before sunset. So I grabbed my 5 weight fly rod w/ 4 pound test leader and headed over to the smaller lake which seems to hold more fish. I tied on a black leech imitating size 8 cone head woolly bugger and walked around casting along the edges only a few feet out. Remember only take the fish if you are going to eat them, otherwise please practice catch and release and don’t litter!!! I caught a couple of small 1-2 pound bass and a 3 pound channel catfish. I’ve caught many different kinds of fish at this lake; bass, catfish(summer), trout(winter), carp, blue gill, crappie, what I think was a kind of goldfish, and one mean red ear slider turtle. So if your ever in the Fountain Valley area swing by and check it out, its on the intersection of Euclid and Warner.
