FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, February 25, 2009

The Lightning Bug is a great fly to be fishing for Trout with when there is no hatch going on. It’s shimmer and bright color imitate a wide variety of Nymphs. The Lightning Bug and the Prince Nymph are my go to fly when Nymph fishing, there is just something about this fly that Trout just cannot avoid. I have also caught all kinds of Sunfish, and I actually have caught a couple of Tilapia and Largemouth bass occasionally with the Lightning Bug.  Pick a few up today at Orvis.

FISH OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, February 25, 2009

This is a photo of the biggest Carp that I have pulled out of the La River so far. The net that he is in is 24 inches long. It took me a good 5-10 minutes to reel this fish in. I was using my 6 weight with 13 Pound test tapered 7 1/2 foot leader (caught him on the glow bug). I asked a guy that bait fishing near me if I could put him on the portable scale that he had, but the scale only went up to 8 pounds and he maxed it out. If I had to guess I would say that it was pushing into the 10 pound range. So get out to the La River, the Carp there are the closest thing that we have to Bone Fish and they will give you the fight of your life.

MY FIRST TIME AT PIRU CREEK

By Sean Fenner, February 22, 2009

I finally got a chance to get out of the house and go do a little Fly Fishing today. I decide to drive up to Piru Creek at Frenchman’s Flat outside of the town of Castaic. I arrived at the creek at about 7:30a.m. It was really cold outside, The thermostat on my car said 42, and the wind was kicking up to about 20mph. I hiked along the Creek, and did not see but a couple of fish. I managed to land two small Rainbows one a hold over from the DFG Stalking and one a Native. Unfortunately because of the wind, my leg, (still a little bruised from my accident),and the tight spots that I was fishing I only barely got a picture of one as it was falling out of my hand. I would definitely recommend going here when it warms up a little, and bring waders. There is not alot of room to fish from the bank. This is not an easy access body of water like West Fork or some others, so be very careful when scaling down to the stream ( I was told that there are alot of Rattle Snakes there when it warms up). If you want info on how to get there check out my link under the locations portion of the main blog page.

FISH OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, February 18, 2009

This is a photo of a little Native Rainbow that I pulled out of Arroyo Seco Canyon Creek. This is a great place to fish they have a great mix of Stocked, Wild, and Native Rainbows on this Creek, and if you go the week the DFG stocks you can catch Rainbows form the start of the creek to as far back as you are willing to hike. The one downfall is that this place is crawling with people during the Spring and Summer.

FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, February 18, 2009

The Royal Coachman is a great American Dry Fly that imitates absolutely nothing in Southern California. It is a great fly to throw if there is no hatch going on. I will warn you though if you try and get a trout to take this fly when they are selectively feeding you will most likely not get a single bite. This fly was originally designed as a Brook Trout fly by John Hailey in 1878, but I have seen many Rainbows rise for this fly. So if you want to Dry Fly when there isn’t anything on the hatch throw a Royal Coachman and an Adams, and get ready for those trout to rise.
