The Royal Coachman is a great American Dry Fly that imitates absolutely nothing in Southern California. It is a great fly to throw if there is no hatch going on. I will warn you though if you try and get a trout to take this fly when they are selectively feeding you will most likely not get a single bite. This fly was originally designed as a Brook Trout fly by John Hailey in 1878, but I have seen many Rainbows rise for this fly. So if you want to Dry Fly when there isn’t anything on the hatch throw a Royal Coachman and an Adams, and get ready for those trout to rise.
