FISH OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 31, 2009

This is a picture of a nice sized Largemouth Bass that I caught Urban Fishing at a city Park lake. Some of these Park Lakes in Southern California are great water for fishing Largemouth Bass. I know a bunch of guys who pay alot of money going to privately stocked lakes to catch the same size Largemouth Bass that I am catching at Park Lakes for free. It’s not just quality though, you can also go for quantity if know what you are doing. I have had good days in the spring and summer, where I have caught 10 or more bass within a couple of hours.

FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 31, 2009

Frog Flies are one my favorite top water (warm water) flies. These flies have some great buoyancy, and make alot of noise. I love to fish these frog imitations at Park Lakes early in the morning along the reeds or next to a weed bed, and watch a Large Mouth smack it. I have even had a couple of Catfish and, Carp, and Sunfish attack these flies. I caught my biggest Largemouth Bass at Mile Square park on one of these, so check out The Trout Spot today and pick a couple up!

FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 27, 2009

The Sparkle Dun is a great Trout Fly to use when the Mayfly hatch is on. This fly imitates a wide variety of Mayfly duns such as Pale Morning Duns, Sulphur, and Baetis Mayflies. This fly is fished in my opinion most effectively on a dead drift, and remember to get the fly to the Trout before your line gets there. I like this fly alot for small bodies of water supporting small Trout, as the body of the fly is sparse so the Trout don’t miss it very easily. However the wings make sure that the fly still has good visibility for the Fisherman. Pick them up today at The Trout Spot!

FISH OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 27, 2009

This is a photo of nice sized Wild Rainbow trout that I pulled out of Bear Creek just off of the West Fork of the San Gabriel River. Bear Creek can be reached by hiking a mile into West Fork and taking the path under the bridge up into Bear Creek. This is a great place to fish during the spring. These fish also get alot less fishing pressure than the ones right by the West Fork Trail. So the nest time that you decide to head out to West Fork, take alittle detour up into Bear Creek. Just don’t forget to pack out what you bring in, pick up any trash if you see it, and practice Catch and Release only!!!

NOW, THIS IS TROUT FISHIN’

By Sean Fenner, March 22, 2009

This morning I drove up to the San Gabriel Mountains to do alittle fishing on the San Gabriel River. My first stop was the East Fork. I fished there for about two hours and caught about 10-15 small Rainbow Trout in the 3-7 inch range. Most of the fish were caught on a size 16 Stimulator Fly. It was turning out to be a great trip, but I just could not leave without checking out the West Fork. I could not believe how many hits I got I must have got over 30 hits and caught about 15 more fish. Most were again in the 3-7 inch range, but I caught three that were over 10 inches a decent size for West Fork. This was the most fun that I have ever had out on the San Gabriel, and Spring has definitely arrived and the Trout know it. Please remember that if you visit the San Gabriel River do not litter, pick up any trash that you see, please don’t swim in the river, and please practice “Catch and Release”(the DFG wont be stalking the river until at least 2010, we don’t want to lose this great resource). If you want more information on the San Gabriel River check out my locations section . Here are some of the pictures from the trip!!!
