FISH OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 31, 2009 3:28 am

This is a picture of a nice sized Largemouth Bass that I caught Urban Fishing at a city Park lake. Some of these Park Lakes in Southern California are great water for fishing Largemouth Bass. I know a bunch of guys who pay alot of money going to privately stocked lakes to catch the same size Largemouth Bass that I am catching at Park Lakes for free. It’s not just quality though, you can also go for quantity if know what you are doing. I have had good days in the spring and summer, where I have caught 10 or more bass within a couple of hours.

FLY OF THE WEEK

Frog Flies are one my favorite top water (warm water) flies. These flies have some great buoyancy, and make alot of noise. I love to fish these frog imitations at Park Lakes early in the morning along the reeds or next to a weed bed, and watch a Large Mouth smack it. I have even had a couple of Catfish and, Carp, and Sunfish attack these flies. I caught my biggest Largemouth Bass at Mile Square park on one of these, so check out Orvis today and pick a couple up!

YORBA REGIONAL PARK LAKES

By Sean Fenner, March 30, 2009 5:15 am

Located at 7600E. La Palma Ave. Anaheim, CA 90807. A series of 4 lakes. I like the two lakes in the center for fishing, but they all hold fish. There is a large population of bass and carp here and they get big, so bring heavier takle. DFG stocks Rainbow Trout from late fall to early spring, and Channel Catfish in the summer months.

EL DORADO PARK LAKES

Located at 7550 Spring Street. Long Beach, CA 90808. This park has 4 lakes to choose from. $5 per car entry fee during the week and $7 on the weekends. DFG Stocks Rainbow Trout from the late fall to early spring, and Channel Catfish during the summer in the 2 bigger lakes. Very good Bass and Panfish action here in the spring and summer. Carp Can be caught here all round year. Can be very crowded on the weekends. For Largemouth Bass and Panfish try to fish near the brush cover or along the reeds the should produce a good number of fish. Remember only take the fish if you are going to eat them, otherwise please practice catch and release and don’t litter!!!

FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, March 27, 2009 3:32 am

The Sparkle Dun is a great Trout Fly to use when the Mayfly hatch is on. This fly imitates a wide variety of Mayfly duns such as Pale Morning Duns, Sulphur, and Baetis Mayflies. This fly is fished in my opinion most effectively on a dead drift, and remember to get the fly to the Trout before your line gets there. I like this fly alot for small bodies of water supporting small Trout, as the body of the fly is sparse so the Trout don’t miss it very easily. However the wings make sure that the fly still has good visibility for the Fisherman. Pick them up today at Orvis!
