In my experience of Fly Fishing for Trout, one of the best rough water dry fly patterns is the Humpy. This fly is an attractor pattern for when a hatch is nowhere to be found. The visibility is great on these flies, and I usually go to one first thing in the morning or if I catch myself on a stream in the twilight hours. I prefer to use a yellow, as I have read many articles proposing that Trout are predisposed to taken flies exhibiting the color yellow. I’m not sure just how this conclusion has come about, but I do know that yellow has caught me more fish. So the next time your out on the stream, light conditions are low, and you’re not really sure what to tie on. Pull this pattern out of your box and get ready for the fish to bite!

Bob’s Surf Fly is considered the go to Surf Perch fly for many So Cal Saltwater Fly Fishermen. This fly will definitely serve it’s purpose of catching Surf Perch, but will also probably get you hooked up on any number of other species. I have seen guys catch many a fish on this fly and for Southern California it’s right there next to the Clouser Deep Minnow on my box. What is a “Hot Butt” fly? Well, it’s just a normal pattern with some kind of red yarn tied into the butt portion of the fly, and on some days that yarn can make all the difference in the world. I remember such a time when I was fishing at Ralph Clark Regional Park and a Bluegill got me caught up on a snag and broke off my Caddis. So, I went to a Hot Butt Caddis of the same tan coloring (it was the next fly over and the Caddis seamed to be working well that day). What a decision, the Panfish went crazy and I caught about 75-100 fish with a couple of hours. It just goes to show you that little changes can make a big difference in fly fishing!

The Woolly Worm is an interesting fly pattern. Is it a Nymph, an Attractor, a Streamer? Well, that depends on two things; Who your talking to and How you fish it. I have meet guys fishing from Park Lakes to Mountain Streams that swear this is the only fly they have ever tied on, and they always catch fish. For me it’s my “oh yeah I have that pattern”fly that I only seem to dig out when I’m out of other patterns to tie on. Now that doesn’t mean that I’m against the pattern in any way it just means that I need to clean my fly boxes out more. Whatever your take on the Woolly Worm, it’s not bait and therefor qualifies a a fly pattern. It also helps that it has a track record of catching lots and lots of fish. Ants can be found by water all over the world, and are in my opinion one of the most overlooked terrestrial flies. Every year Spring through Fall there never fails to be days when I am out on the water and I see Ants being blown into the water. To which I grab an Ant pattern out of my box and the fish start hitting. I remember one such time when I was fishing Santa Anita Creek and I was getting skunked, when all of the sudden I felt something on my neck. I grabbed it with my finger and it was none other than an ant, so I tied on a matching size and caught 9 fish on that one fly in the next hour. The next time your out on the water and you see ants, don’t be afraid to tie one on. After all Entomology is one of the key aspects to this amazing sport, and insect account for more than 2/3 of the worlds known organisms! Springtime brings great action for Sunfish on terrestrials, and my favorite one to catch them on is a Foam Beetle. There is just something about the Beetle Profile that drives the Pre Spawn fish crazy. If I had to pick what fly I thought would catch me a big Panfish a Beetle would be the first imitation to make it our of my fly box. The fish seem to bite them hard, and the profile allows for good hookups. A Strike Indicator Fly is a great alternative to the traditional strike indicator. In my Opinion it fishes the dropper much more naturally and it seems to help get more hits. I have even caught a few Trout, Bass, and Panfish on this fly. Generally I would just use a Hopper for the dry, but this fly is a lot easier to see in low light conditions and fast water. It’s a better solution than straining your eyes trying to keep track of your fly. So get rid of your Indicator Yarn or those Twist Ons and pick a couple of these bad boys up and increase the number of fish you catch. It is a great imitator of a handful of different Crabs and Shrimp that species like Surf Perch, Yellow Croaker, Corbina, Sand Bass, and many others will snatch up. Turks Tarantula is one of those flies that you tie on thinking “I can’t believe that Trout hit this thing”, but they will hit it and hit it hard. This fly has great Visibility and Floatation for the fast riffles that pull other flies under, and I love to fish it with a dropper Copper John or Prince Nymph. I’m not going to even try and start to name all of the bugs this thing imitates. Let’s just say that it looks like a ton of terrestrials and stoneflies. The Sucker Spawn is a tradition go to, winter Steelhead fly. But, we don’t really have many uses for Steelhead Flies in Southern California. Luckily this fly doubles as one of my favorite Carp Flies. I have a whole box dedicated to Sucker Spawns and Egg Flies just for Carp on the LA River and other local waters. I have tied this fly more than any other and in so any different material, color, size, etc. variations that it would be to long to list. What can I say about the Stimulator, the name says it all it stimulates Trout to bite. This is the fly that I 90% of the time start out my Trout Fishing with. It works great as a prospecting pattern when there isn’t any hatch, or it imitates everything in the water when you have a hatch. I read one time that there are 5 recognition for Trout taking a fly; Color, Iridescence, Movement, Translucency, Transparency, and shape. The Stimulator falls under all of these categories, and it has caught fish for me constantly. I was fishing a stream in the San Gabriels one time and nothing was rising, I didn’t see anything hatching, and I must have tied on 25 different dries and not one hit. As soon as I tied on a Yellow size 16, I could not keep the fish off of it, and at the end of the day I had caught something like 18-20 fish on the one fly. Use this dry the next time your out prospecting and I know you will get more bites. Buy a few at The Trout Spot and get them at a great price.

This fly has produced for me time and time again, and it imitates so many Mayflies and Terrestrials that the Trout are bound to hit it. The inchworm is a fly pattern that I have just recently discovered, and I am liking what I have seen. I have tied it on twice up in Gabriels and both times the trout really seemed to key in on it. This fly is supposed to be imitating a moth larva, though I personally have never seen them on any water I fish in the Gabriels or the Berdinos. But, the Trout hit it and that’s all that matters. I like one with a nice indicator tuft for easy visibility, it helps if your fly drifts into a shadow cast on the water. I am finding that the more I am willing to adapt and try new patterns and techniques I am coming away skunked less and less, but don’t get me wrong I still have my days!

A fly that I really love to use in the LateFall/Early Winter at Urban Park Lakes is the Bead Head Woolly Bugger. I like to use a size 8 0r 10, when I am out, those sizes seem to get the most bites across the board. I have been out fishing a Woolly Bugger and caught a Bluegill, Green Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Carp, and Catfish in the same session with the same fly. If that is not versatile, then I don’t know what is! The reason that I really like to use the Bead Head in the fall, and not the Cone Head Bugger is simply the number of bites. In my opinion the fish slow down, the water is colder, and the fish will sit looking up for the next meal. To me the Cone Head lands too hard and gets right in the face of the fish, which seems to spook them a little. So, good news it’s late fall early winter, and there is some great fishing to be had. Almost no one fishes Park Lakes right now. They are just waiting for the heavy Trout Stocks, and all those other species are just waiting to be caught.
