I have not really had alot of time to go fishing lately, so I have been hitting up the local Park Lakes with the small amount of time that I have to fish. I have been taking two rods with me a 5 weight for the bass and a 3 weight for the Panfish. The Bass action hasn’t been as good as I have hoped, but I can’t keep the Panfish off the line. The other day I went over to Mile Square Park Lake for maybe about 30 minutes to an hour and I must have pulled out at least 50 small Panfish. They’re not big, but a fish is a fish and they scrap hard for their size!!!
A Nice pic of a little Largemouth Bass that I pulled out of the small lake at Mile Square Park just before dark. I love fishing at Mile Square. It is a nice little Park Lake that does not get a ton of fishing pressure, and has a good population of Largemouth and Sunfish. If you want more info about Mile Square check it out under my locations section on the main blog page.
This morning I was going to get up early in the morning, and head out to San Antonio Creek below Mount Baldy. My alarm went off, but my legs did not feel like getting up so I hit the snooze and woke up at 9:00 a.m. When I got up I decided to head over to Mile Square Park down the street from my place, and do a little Urban Trout Fishing since the DFG stocked the lake the night before. I only ended up catching one little Rainbow on a Royal Coachman Fly, but I did meet up with one of the guys who follows this blog Angel who was out fishing with his brother Chris. We talked for a little, and I then I decided to head back, it was cold and the fishing was slow. It’s so cool to be out fishing and meet you guys that are commenting on this blog, thanks for all that you guys contribute!!! Remember only take what you are going to eat throw the rest back and Please dont litter. Here are some pics that I snapped of Angel and Chris.
Angel Teaching an old Vietnamese guy how to fish. Chris focused on catching his next Trout. Angel with the bigger of his two Bows.
I decided to do another Cartoon Photo for fish of the week, because I got such great comments on last weeks photo. This is a Largemouth Bass that I caught at a Alondra Park Lake a while back. The majority of the Largemouth Bass that I catch at Park Lakes are caught on a Woolly Bugger or a Popper. The best time for Fly Fishing Bass is in the Mid Spring to Early Fall. From the Late Fall to Early Spring the Bass shut down at all the Park Lakes that I know of.
This is a picture of a Channel Catfish that I caught while fishing at Mile Square Park. It’s actually funny how I caught it, everyone thinks of Catfish as bottom feeders (apparently this cat was not). I was fishing for bass with a Chartreuse Frog Popper, on some grass pads, when all of the sudden bang this fish hit the popper like n tomorrow. So I set the hook and started playing the fish, well after a minute or two I noticed that the fish spinning in circles. I thought to my self this can’t be a Bass, and sure enough it was a 2 1/2 pound Channel Catfish.
Here is a photo of a 5 pound Largemouth Bass that I pulled out of Mile Square Park Lake on a Popper Frog. This is the largest City Park Lake Bass that I have caught so far. If you want more info on Mile Square Park Lake check out my link under locations on the main page of the blog.
After Work today I decided to go over to Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley down the street from my house. The Park has two fishing lakes and the fish tend to bite a couple hours after sunrise and a couple hours before sunset. So I grabbed my 5 weight fly rod w/ 4 pound test leader and headed over to the smaller lake which seems to hold more fish. I tied on a black leech imitating size 8 cone head woolly bugger and walked around casting along the edges only a few feet out. Remember only take the fish if you are going to eat them, otherwise please practice catch and release and don’t litter!!! I caught a couple of small 1-2 pound bass and a 3 pound channel catfish. I’ve caught many different kinds of fish at this lake; bass, catfish(summer), trout(winter), carp, blue gill, crappie, what I think was a kind of goldfish, and one mean red ear slider turtle. So if your ever in the Fountain Valley area swing by and check it out, its on the intersection of Euclid and Warner.
