FLY OF THE WEEK

By Sean Fenner, November 21, 2009 7:58 pm

The inchworm is a fly pattern that I have just recently discovered, and I am liking what I have seen. I have tied it on twice up in Gabriels and both times the trout really seemed to key in on it. This fly is supposed to be imitating a moth larva, though I personally have never seen them on any water I fish in the Gabriels or the Berdinos. But, the Trout hit it and that’s all that matters.  I like one with a nice indicator tuft for easy visibility, it helps if your fly drifts into a shadow cast on the water. I am finding that the more  I am willing to adapt and try new patterns and techniques I am coming away skunked less and less, but don’t get me wrong I still have my days!

Okay I was checking the Orvis website yesterday to see what flies I was going to pick up at the Pasadena Store, and I came across this fly the “Melrose Mullet”. This fly is not supposed to be an imitation of the fish (Mullet), but rather the hair style (Mullet) that is sooo awesome. I am also going to guess that because this fly looks like a fish would never come near it, it will probably catch fish. I think I will put one in my fly box, just as a conversation starter if I ever meet a Fly Fisher out on the water with a Mullet Haircut.

The Eggi Juan Kenobi has got be one of the coolest flies that I have ever seen. This fly is the Glowbug and the San Juan worm in one fly, and they even added a bead head to help get it down. I got to fish over at the LA River with this fly, and I have got to say that the Carp definitely have a week spot for it. Pick a couple up at Orvis or play with the pattern and tie a couple of your own.

The Muddler Minnow is a fly designed by Don Gapen to imitate Sculpin for Trout. However this fly will work for any species fresh and salt water that will respond to a Streamer like pattern. I have caught Bass, Trout, and Panfish with this fly. I have also heard of saltwater fly fisherman catching any kind of saltwater fish that feed on baitfish such as Snook, Bonita, Rays, Croaker, Sand Bass, etc. So if you want a good versatile fly to go along side your Woolly Buggers through a couple Muddler Minnows in, I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.  Pick them up at your local Orvis Store/Dealer!

The Prince Nymph is a great go to nymph if you cannot see any surface activity. This is the Nymph version of the Attractor Dry Fly. Personally I always carry 2 with a bead head and 2 without, this fly definitely has to be my go to Nymph. The Prince can also be used to imitate a Stonefly, Backswimmer, or a Dark Mayfly Nymph, if fishing in a run or ripples. This fly has probably caught more Trout on more water for more fisherman than any other Nymph imitation. That is reason enough to throw a couple in yor fly box. If you need a selection check out Orvis!

The Hopper is a great Terrestrial Fly all throughout the West Coast of the United States. If I am going to be using a terrestrial, you better believe that 9 times out of 10 it is going to be a Hopper. The hopper comes in all shapes and sizes. I have had the best luck on the brightly colored size 14-16 Hoppers. If you need to pick up a couple I recommend a selection from Orvis.
