Sometimes the fish might just be a little tired of all the frogs patterns, Crayfish Imitations, Matching the hatches and they just want to sink their teeth into a nice piece of whatever they think this fly is. I love trying new Fly patterns, and I will make things just as complicated as the next guy. But I do believe that sometimes simpler is better, and it doesn’t get much simpler than this. Let’s liken this pattern to the plain metal spoons of the Conventional Bass Fishing World. They work, trust me I used to catch a lot of Bass, Panfish, and Trout on them as a kid. Just as I catch a lot of fish on this pattern today.

This pattern has an amazing way of imitating just about any Baitfish that you need it to. From Urban Park Lakes to Streams the fish just can’t seem to resist this fly. I usually fish it in a size 6, and I love to cast it around Urban Lakes in the Spring and Summer. I will usually pull it out of my box just as the Bluegill and Green Sunfish start to show. It seems to get me a Bass every time and the Larger Panfish usually show some interest. I am genuinely convinced that any streamer pattern with just the right amount of flash tied in is just irresistibleto these warm water species. But don’t take my word for it! Before you know it we will be back to winter, and you will be reading this post wishing you had picked some up for Bass season.

When Poppers, Frogs, and Mice just aren’t getting the kind of attention they deserve, it’s time to reach for the Slider. You’ll get a little more subtle presentation and the Bass should come out to play. Sliders give a great wounded Baitfish imitation and the Bass go into a trance, they just can’t resist. I like to use this fly around shoreline drops offs and to fish it off banks, and the Bass usually will smack it. My hook up percentage is good on this fly, and the Bass seem to hold onto them a little longer than Poppers and Frogs. A must for any serious Basser’s Fly Box. Especially if you fish high pressured Urban Waters! Also great for our brothers on the other side of the country fishing Top Water for Pike and Muskie.

Why use a Crab Imitation in Southern California? Aren’t these flies only good for flats fishing in places like Florida and South America? Well, just ask a bait fisherman what he is using the next time you see one out in the Surf. Chances are that he has a Sand Crab on his Hook (Specifically Mole Crabs). Crabs are a staple in the diet of many of the fish found in and around the So Cal Surf. I like to use these imitations on a slow stripping retrieve, letting the waves do all the work. It seems to give the fly a natural tumbling look that just drives the fish crazy. I have seen everything from Rays and Sharks, to Croaker and Perch, and many others caught on Crabs all around California beaches. So the next time the Crabs are out and the fish are keyed in, make sure you have a few in your fly box to satisfy their craving.

Adding “Rubber Legs” to a fly changes a pattern and it’s uses dramatically. It gives the fly a larger profile and changes the way the fish interpret the pattern. One of my favorite flies to catch carp is a Size 12 Bead Hare’s Ear w/ Rubber legs. The pattern is now transformed from a Trout and Panfish Fly to a fly that Carp and Largemouth Bass will readily take. This also works on patterns like the Prince Nymph, Copper John, and many others. I usually switch over from a woolly bugger to these Rugger Legged Flies in the fall as the water temperature drops and the fish commit more to slower and smaller imitations. A lot of people think that as soon as Summer is over the Bass and Carp fishing is done, and it’s time to turn to Trout. That’s great if that is your desire, but it’s not the necessity. Try one of these patterns in a size 10- 12 on your Next “Urban Fly Venture” and I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Damsel Nymphs are a must pattern for any Urban Fly Fishermen. They are abundant on most urban ponds and lakes that we fish, and that means the fish know them and know them well. The Damsel Fly Nymph swims with a small burst of about a few inches and then rests, and the your retrieve should be fished in the same manner. The biggest mistake I see Fly Fishermen make is stripping the line too fast and not letter the fish take on the pause, as is their natural instinct. Fish the fly slower in the colder months and faster in the warmer. This is a year round pattern and is great when the Panfish are not taking hard enough to hook up on something like a Dragon Fly Nymph or Leech Pattern. It also seems to work great on Stocked Trout anytime. Double up the pattern on a dropper rig and your bound to get hits.

Now if I were to ask you what the most successful Bass Fly is, you would probably tell me the Woolly Bugger, right? Well, that is up for debate and one pattern that has to be thrown in the mix is the Bead Head Bouface. Everyone knows that John Barr is famous for creating the Copper John, but I think he deserves just as much credit for this fly. Just pull a Bouface out of your box and ask yourself “what do I want to imitate a sculpin, a crayfish, a baitfish, a leech?” All the subsurface stuff that Bass crave. One time I was fishing with this fly at an Urban So Cal Lake on a super clear day. I was watching the action of my fly, when I started getting little taps. I stopped it right in front of me and looked down to see about 5 Small Bluegill with my Bouface Pattern pinned to the bottom, pecking at it like a nightcrawler on a giant treble hook. It’s a fishes’ instinct to grab this fly, the movement breathes in the water and the Bass just can’t resist!

This pattern has been my best producer for Bottom fish like Halibut and Sole, and the Rays and Sharks will hit it all day long. So the next time you’re in the Surf, branch out a little bit. Instead of tying on that Deep Minnow that you use every time your feet hit that water, grab a Surf Bug and see what this little guy can do for you. Just remember they won’t just appear in your box, you have to buy a few from The Trout Spot.

It is a daunting task to even try and name all of the ways this fly can be fished. From dead Drifting, to Wet Fly, to Dropper rig the Zug does it all. Cliff really knew what he was doing when he created this caddis imitation . As far as I’m concerned any fly tied with peacock hearl is an ace. Use it on slow to still water with short erratic strips, and you will drive the fish crazy all day long. From Bass to Trout, the Zug doesn’t discriminate.

In my experience of Fly Fishing for Trout, one of the best rough water dry fly patterns is the Humpy. This fly is an attractor pattern for when a hatch is nowhere to be found. The visibility is great on these flies, and I usually go to one first thing in the morning or if I catch myself on a stream in the twilight hours. I prefer to use a yellow, as I have read many articles proposing that Trout are predisposed to taken flies exhibiting the color yellow. I’m not sure just how this conclusion has come about, but I do know that yellow has caught me more fish. So the next time your out on the stream, light conditions are low, and you’re not really sure what to tie on. Pull this pattern out of your box and get ready for the fish to bite!

Well, it’s just a normal pattern with some kind of red yarn tied into the butt portion of the fly, and on some days that yarn can make all the difference in the world. I remember such a time when I was fishing at Ralph Clark Regional Park and a Bluegill got me caught up on a snag and broke off my Caddis. So, I went to a Hot Butt Caddis of the same tan coloring (it was the next fly over and the Caddis seamed to be working well that day). What a decision, the Panfish went crazy and I caught about 75-100 fish with a couple of hours. It just goes to show you that little changes can make a big difference in fly fishing!

The Woolly Worm is an interesting fly pattern. Is it a Nymph, an Attractor, a Streamer? Well, that depends on two things; Who your talking to and How you fish it. I have meet guys fishing from Park Lakes to Mountain Streams that swear this is the only fly they have ever tied on, and they always catch fish. For me it’s my “oh yeah I have that pattern”fly that I only seem to dig out when I’m out of other patterns to tie on. Now that doesn’t mean that I’m against the pattern in any way it just means that I need to clean my fly boxes out more. Whatever your take on the Woolly Worm, it’s not bait and therefor qualifies a a fly pattern. It also helps that it has a track record of catching lots and lots of fish. That’s right Mosquitoes, and for the serious Southern California Urban Fly Fisher this pattern is a must. A good Mosquito pattern never fails to catch a few Bass, Carp, Sunfish, or Trout as this bug is extremely abundant from Lakes, to Creeks, to Ponds, to Riverbeds. You can almost always count on a few Mosquitoes being in the area and that means a sure pattern for catching fish.
