FLY OF THE WEEK “BEAD HEAD BOUFACE”

By , November 5, 2010 8:17 pm

Now if I were to ask you what the most successful Bass Fly is, you would probably tell me the Woolly Bugger, right? Well, that is up for debate and one pattern that has to be thrown in the mix is the Bead Head Bouface. Everyone knows that John Barr is famous for creating the Copper John, but I think he deserves just as much credit for this fly. Just pull a Bouface out of your box and ask yourself “what do I want to imitate a sculpin, a crayfish, a baitfish, a leech?” All the subsurface stuff that Bass crave. One time I was fishing with this fly at an Urban So Cal Lake on a super clear day. I was watching the action of my fly, when I started getting little taps. I stopped it right in front of me and looked down to see about 5 Small Bluegill with my Bouface Pattern pinned to the bottom, pecking at it like a nightcrawler on a giant treble hook. It’s a fishes’ instinct to grab this fly, the movement breathes in the water and the Bass just can’t resist!

FLY OF THE WEEK “FLASHBACK PHEASANT TAIL”

By , October 28, 2010 11:37 pm

Did you know that there are over 600 species of Mayfly Nymphs in Northern America alone? That’s right I said 600, and many of them are small and brown making the flashback pheasant tail nymph the ultimate Mayfly Nymph Pattern. Not only that, but in lakes, it’s a Callibaetis Nymph if I have ever seen one. The Flashback imitates the shine on the shell of the baetis as it is about to hatch, and during a hatch these flies can be extremely deadly.

FLY OF THE WEEK “SURF BUG”

By , October 14, 2010 10:52 pm

The Surf Bug is a great fly for fishing sandy beaches in Southern California. It’s a little heavier than most Surf Flies that I use, but that helps in strike detection when Saltwater Fishing. This pattern has been my best producer for Bottom fish like Halibut and Sole, and the Rays and Sharks will hit it all day long. So the next time you’re in the Surf, branch out a little bit. Instead of tying on that Deep Minnow that you use every time your feet hit that water, grab a Surf Bug and see what this little guy can do for you. Just remember they won’t just appear in your box, you have to buy a few from The Trout Spot.

FLY OF THE WEEK “ZUG BUG”

By , September 23, 2010 9:39 pm

The Zug Bug Fly Pattern easily falls into my list of the top 10 best nymph patterns of all time. It is a daunting task to even try and name all of the ways this fly can be fished. From dead Drifting, to Wet Fly, to Dropper rig the Zug does it all. Cliff really knew what he was doing when he created this caddis imitation . As far as I’m concerned any fly tied with peacock hearl is an ace. Use it on slow to still water with short erratic strips, and you will drive the fish crazy all day long. From Bass to Trout, the Zug doesn’t discriminate.

FLY OF THE WEEK “MYSIS SHRIMP”

By , August 20, 2010 9:06 pm

As advised in my previous post this little Mysis Shrimp Pattern from The Trout Spot can be deadly on Bass. I know most people don’t usually think of smaller flies to catch Bass, but you had better believe that under the right conditions this fly will get them hooked. I like to fish a Size 14 0r 16 with a size 10 or 12 as the heavier dropper to get down a little but deeper. Sometimes it takes thinking a little outside the box and tying on something a little bit different to get the fish to bite!

FLY OF THE WEEK “JANSSEN’S MINNOW”

By , August 13, 2010 11:22 pm

Janssen’s Minnow was created to imitate the small fish that are a staple in the diet of Trout and Bass. Both are known to be cannibalistic, and around this time of year these imitations do the trick. The fingerlings of the year are starting to come out, and the big boys are looking to pick off a few youngsters. Personally, I like the Shad and Rainbow imitations the best. The Trout Spot sells Brook, Brown, Rainbow, and Shad imitations and I have caught both Trout and Bass on all of them. Pick a few up today, and get that big meat eater Trout or Bass on the other end of your line.

FLY OF THE WEEK “CLOUSER MINNOW”

By , July 30, 2010 11:51 pm

The Clouser Minnow is without a doubt the most essential Saltwater fly. It comes in colors to imitate forage for just about any saltwater quarry. This fly has caught more species than I can even begin to count. Plus, it’s the “go to” Saltwater fly of two of the most famous Fly Fishermen in the game (Lefty Kreh and Bob Clouser). If it’s good enough for these guys to fish all around the world, you had better bet that it will do some damage on the shorelines of our So Cal Beaches. Get a great price on every color pattern you will ever need at the The Trout Spot!
